I launched another gimmick, fun for use on your blog or for handing
out: Festisite's
Personalized Money Generator. Go ahead, and slap your own
photograph on a dollar bill... other than that, festisite.com more or less
restructures several poem related web pages from <a

Slovak (Peter Tuharsky), Greek (Prokopis Prokopidis), Turkish (Enver
Altin), Japanese (Masanobu Yokota), Bulgarian (Ivan Dimov), Hungarian
(Ory Mate). Furthermore, more polish on the applets was done (e.g. vertical
applet support), and the usual bug fixing.

Signalling using land marks is an ancient form of
communication. Compare this to e-mail, hardly available for half a
century and already collapsing by spam.Forget about boring e-cards
with flashy animations. Instead, send a unique satellite-visible
message, originating from your own house...

New Swedish and Catalan translations, updates to Czech translation.
Workrave no longer consumes 100% CPU is if a break is started while
the screen is locked. Fixed a bug that could cause breaks to stop
running when 'Suspend timer while inactive' was disabled. Added
support for storing configuration in a .ini file, and for configuring the data
storage directory (this can be used to run Workrave from a memory
stick). GNOME screen saver support added. The applet popup menu is now
accessible when all timers hidden.

I have been toying with this idea of a bean bag juggling humans
instead of the other way around for a couple of years now. It occured
to me ever since a friend of mine asked me if I would draw a logo for
a juggling convention, which I declined due to lack of both time and
inspiration. After the opportunity passed by, this idea popped us. I
finally got around towards actually realizing it, but then in the form
of a screen saver / animation:
Bean Bag Strikes Back!.

party gtk+ runtime, fixed a bug that caused status windows to
be disabled when the micro-break timer was hidden, translation fixes and better hibernate/standby support on Unix.

none. Version 1.8.1 contains a fix for this bug.

Finally, at long last, 1.8.0 has arrived. Long overdue, but still
within the one year period since the last release: Workrave now gives
additional feedback when becoming active during a break by flashing
the break window border, the current mode is visualized in the system
tray icon, a "Restbreak now" button was added, improved KDE support
(native KDE applet and KDE sound events), added decent tooltips for
Workrave system tray icon, and lots of new translations (Basque,
Lithuanian, Portuguese, Norwegian, Czech, Hebrew).

My site was taken off-line due to the enormous amounts of traffic
flooding in because of Saint Nicholas. It was taken offline December
2nd. I cannot really blame my provider (IPowerWeb), in fact, I am quite
pleased that the site could withstand all the traffic with their
simple virtual server service. Some statistics:

Google AdSense counted 305895 page impressions on December 1st.

NedStat reported the following statistics:

GTK-Wimp has been integrated into GTK+. As part of the integration, it
has been renamed to "MS-Windows Engine". If the need arises, it is
still possible to release a GTK-Wimp version separately from
GTK+. However, the goal is to play nice with the GTK+ release
cycle. Details:

The trigger to the integration was GTK+ bug 109615

The CVS archive at SourceForge is now officialy obsolete.

The new location is gtk+/modules/engines/ms-windows/ over
at GNOME CVS.

Please use GNOME's
bugzilla from now on to report problems and patches.

The hiker is back where it started: it is at the Travellers
on Holiday hotel again. I noticed that Dekromme was going to visit
this cache before going on holiday to the USA, and mailed Team Aragorn
to see if they could pick him up. So they did, thanks, Team Aragorn!

"DotSphinx wants to go to
America. Its owner asked us to drop it in 'Travellers on Holiday'
because a lift had already been arranged from there to Florida. We wish you a nice trip, DS!"

that addresses this problem.

Team Aragorn came by and transported the hiker from Belgium to the

Today I finally got to re-launch my Hitchhiker. Until today, I just
could not find the time to set the hiker free again, after we returned
it home from the Travellers
on Holiday. We dropped him off at Eindhoven's
Kwartet Noord-Oost. This cache is very frequently visited, so
there is a very high probability that it will make its next move
within one or two weeks..

It turns out that the Travellers
on Holiday cache hardly gets any visits. And, history shows that
it takes quite a while for travellers to actually get out of the
cache. This (and the fact that I wanted to show the hitchhiker to my
brother who happened to be in the Netherlands for his job) made me
decide to return the hitchhiker home.

By the way, on the way home, my one year old son pulled the little
chain too hard, and the teared the card. I fixed this by reconnecting
the card on its left side.

enjoy this feature for quite some time now, but it is finally coming
to the Windows world. Here's a snapshot:

We finally set our hitchhiker free, and dropped him off at Travellers
on Holiday, a cache that collects travel bugs willing to travel
internationally. I sure hope they accept hitchikers as well. Anyway, it
is not your typical cache as you can tell by looking at the photo.

Let's hope the hitchhiker can make its way out of the Netherlands.
Umm, let's also hope the kind people behind this cache do not take him
straight to his designated destination, that would not be
fun. Making it to the east side of the USA would be great, but any
country other than the Netherlands would be great just as well!

I bumped into the <a

logo candidates, and was tempted to give it my own try. I have
made two versions of a logo, both are shown below. The letters 'U' and
'L' form the abstract face of a user. The logo is well-suited for
B&W media. The color of the face should perhaps be changed to
something more neutral, so that it does not refer to a specific skin color
(how about blue?). Other suggestions, anyone?

I have been tinkering with the idea of unleashing a <a

world for quite some time now. Well, sometimes you need some new year
resolutions to get the job done. So here he finally is, Hitchhiker

This is the first year my site survived the Saint Nicholas
festivities. All records were scattered, with a peak 247.212 visitors
per day on december 5th. I am extremely pleased with the performance
of my provider: ipowerweb. The
past years with HostRocket
were really troublesome, as they unplugged my site at only +/- 90.000
visitors per day already.

Pressed toolbar steppers get drawn ETCHED_IN now. Menubars now have
their shadow set to NONE, which is generally more consistent. Setup
menu and toolbar icon sizes to Windows defaults. Non-standard color
schemes, for example "Brick", are handled properly now. XP scrollbar
grippers are no longer displayed when they do not fit on the
scrollbar.

The most notable changes in this release are: added a new option
"Block mode" ranging from no blocking (break windows can be freely
dragged around) to full input and screen blocking, added multihead
support for Windows, improved suspend (to ram) support, added "Shut
down" and "Lock" buttons to the break windows. Furthermore, the
stability on Windows improved considerably now that several
longstanding issues have been resolved.

I am trying to streamline my blogging, and took some initial steps to
achieve single source blogging. This renders my Advogato diary
obsolete, but I never actually bothered to maintain that one
anyway. My blog can be syndicated in the following ways:

http://www.dotsphinx.com/blog/rss.xml:
standard syndication, fetches all.

for all GTK-Wimp related blogging.

for all Workrave blog postings made in Dutch.

What remains to be done is to aggregate the relevant bloggings on
the GTK-Wimp and <a

The Gaim buddy icons were still not drawn correctly, even with
0.4.2. This time, I tested the problem more thoroughly and now I
really fixed the problem. So, 0.4.3 should be the best release so
far. Hopefully, it gets included as default into the GTK Windows installer.

impact and were backed out. The trouble was that buddy icons
disappeared in Gaim.

This is a minor update to iron out some bugs. Particularly, obscure
console messages caused by the previous version have been fixed. It
also includes a few new tweaks: tree expanders look a bit better in
the non-XP case now, and the cursor blink time has been adjusted to
follow the Windows setting.

Dom Lachowicz joined in and did most changes for 0.4.0. Most important
changes: enable proper fonts/sizes for menus, status bars. Handle
boxes/panes now do XP style REBAR theming. Toolbars should draw the
REBAR part properly. Menubars and toolbars now are etched-in to mimic
Windows' behavior. Furthermore, scrollbar sizes, radio/check button
sizes, paned sizes tooltip color/font, font preferences including bold
or italic are now all properly adhered to. Thanks, Dom!

We have set up a <a

Currently, it builds a Debian package, source tarball, and a Windows installer version. Interesting to note is that the Windows version is completely built on a GNU/Linux system, using a cross-compiler and Wine to create the final setup.exe.

Soon the European Commission is going to vote a revised version of
the European Patentability rules. The proposed revision contains a set of
serious challenges to Open Source development since regulation regarding software
patents will be broadly extended and might forbid independent development of
innovative (Open Source and not) software-based solutions.

GTK-Wimp 0.3.0 released. Now tooltips and progress bars nicely adhere to the system colors as
well. There was a mixup in drawing the proper checkbox state,
fixed. Disabled the colored, alternating rules for GtkTreeViews to
match the Windows behaviour. The open/close tree expander symbols were
accidentally switched, fixed. The menu background color now follows
XP's color scheme.

Due to other priorities the work on GTK-Wimp got neglected. It has

it really won't be that long...

We now have a Spanish leaflet available, thanks to Pablo Rodriguez.

More progress on Miss Workrave. I have added armatures (bones), so
I can now position her in any anatomically incorrect position :) Also
new is an office chair, which still needs some nice colors though...:

Here you can see the logo that never was. I made an attempt at a
logo for the upcoming OOTI
symposium, but it was not elected. The logo had to express the future
of massive parallel computing...

I spent the last few nights moving the site over to my new
provider. The site is finally 100% up and running again.
So now I can continue to work on Miss Workrave. I am currently
focusing on her face, here's a first snapshot:

The web site has been out of the air for a few days, visitors were
presented the following:

I am really fed up with my hosting company, HostRocket. They claim the site
was getting 30 visitors per second, and they told me to move to a
(semi)dedicated server. They would not provide me with any information
on where the hits were coming from. Normally, the site receives +/-
500 visits a day. As I don't earn any money with the site I cannot
afford a dedicated server. Anyway, it should really not be necessary
given the amount of hits I usually receive. The service at HostRocket
is blunt, to say the least. This was not the only incident I had with
HostRocket, but it was the last drop. So, I moved to ipowerweb.com.

It has been a bit too quiet on the Workrave front lately, so I thought it would be nice to inform you about what's cooking. Initially, we were planning on releasing version 1.4.0, with exercises being the most interesting new feature addition. However, a lot of time went into 3D modeling of 'Miss Workrave', who is supposed to instruct you on how to do your exercises. In fact, a lot of time is still going into that as I speak right now. Therefore, it is most likely that we'll release an intermediate 1.2.3 in the near future. You'll have to be a bit more patient for the exercises, but here's a sneak preview of how "Miss Workrave" is going to look...

Completed "Eindhovens kwartet" by finding the last of the 4 caches. "12 steden, 13 ongemakken", here we come...

I finally added a blog section to my site. Not very original, everyone else has one. What finally drove me to do it was the fact that I like the idea of being able to look back and see what I was up to at that point in time. I used an old news file to generate a bit of content for the past few years. Hopefully, I can find the time and discipline to maintain this blog...

Went Geocaching and found GCBB13. Only one more to complete the "Eindhovens kwartet".

The Window version now has a native look and feel, so Workrave no
longer looks like a second grade application when running on
Windows. Furthermore,
support for Gnome session management was
improved: Workrave is now properly restarted by the Gnome session
manager. Finally, the overall user interface has improved, addressing
most HIG
issues.

So, here you have it. GTK-Wimp 0.1.0, the first release.

The most important new features in this version are statistics and Gnome/KDE applet support. Workrave now keeps track of all your activity and allows you to browse through any date in history to see for how long you used the computer, how many keys you pressed, the distance your mouse moved, and many other statistical data. Furthermore, when running Workrave on Gnome or KDE, the break information can be displayed itself in the panel.

We have put together a leaflet for you to use to help spread the word.

Internal redesign of the site. The site now makes full use of the latest CSS technology, and no longer relies on HTML tables to do fancy layouting. I invite you to have a look at the HTML source of this page.

My provider closed down the site because it generated too much traffic. This year it reached approximately 70000 visitors per day before being shut down. The number is slightly down from last year where it got 92550 visitors in one day before being shut down. Currently, moving to a dedicated server is not (financially) feasible. It would be if the site received that much traffic during the whole year, and not just on Saint Nicholas day.

We opened an online Workrave shop: buy original Workrave items (T-shirts, mugs, caps, ...) to sponsor the Workrave project.

After extensive testing we finally present our first production
release. Version 1.0.0 is rock solid and ready for daily usage at the
office. New in this release is a Dutch translation, and the daily
limit window is fully operational now.

Added sound support. For office PCs that do not have a sound card, you
can choose to play sounds through the internal PC speaker.
Also new,
but still experimental, is distribution support, dubbed "The Collective". You can now create a network of
Workrave instances running on several computers. All instances that
are part of the collective share the same timer information, meaning
that if one computer informs you to take a break, it is futile to flee
to another computer as it will also tell you to take a break.
Furthermore, some nasty crashes in the Windows version were fixed.

Released soon after 0.1.0. Lots of bugs have been fixed, and the Windows version now has support for the system tray.

This is the first public release. Please note that Workrave is still undergoing heavy development. Having said that, the current development versions are already quite usable.
